Ocean Portal recently published a great piece about seagrasses, which support commercial and recreational fisheries, provide cover for many species, clean the surrounding water, and help pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Due to the benefits they offer, seagrasses are believed to be the third most valuable ecosystem in the world, second only to estuaries and wetlands. One hectare of seagrass, which is roughly the size of two football fields, is estimated to be worth over $19,000 per year.
