In 2012, Tampa-based conservation photographer Carlton Ward Jr. led an expedition traversing a ribbon of protected and targeted-for-preservation land stretching the length of the state to draw attention to the urgent need to preserve a largely undeveloped corridor — not just for nature lovers, but for all the state’s residents.
“There are two worlds in Florida,” said Ward, an eighth-generation Floridian. “There’s the coastal world of the new Florida, and there’s this other world of the interior that’s out of sight and mind to many who live here. It’s a world that’s vital to everyone’s future because that’s where our water comes from, that’s where our food comes from and that’s where wildlife survives.”
