Help Bonefish & Tarpon Trust restore vital creek systems in The Bahamas. Your donation will restore essential habitat for bonefish and many other species while also supporting the regeneration of mangroves damaged by Hurricane Dorian.
The tidal creeks of The Bahamas are part of the coastal habitat mosaic that is essential to bonefish and many other species of fish and wildlife. Creeks also support natural mangrove regeneration by distributing mangrove seeds to nearby areas, where they take root, help hold the flats together, and create habitat for bonefish and other species.
In 2026, BTT will restore two creeks, August Creek on Grand Bahama’s East End and West Gap Creek on the North Shore, which are blocked by old causeways used decades ago by logging operations. The West Gap causeway has cut off the creek from other coastal habitats, making them inaccessible to bonefish, and to fishing guides and anglers. To address this issue, BTT is partnering with the Bahamas Ministry of Works to restore West Gap Creek by excavating channels in the existing causeway. Meanwhile, the Snapper Island Causeway obstructing August Creek will be entirely removed.
This critical work will improve water quality, restore natural flows, and allow fish to access flats habitat that has been cut off for many years. It will also help expand the fishing grounds for local bonefish guides and improve the overall health of The Bahamas’ flats fishery.
