Blue Bonefish Lodge Renews Support of BTT as Gold Sponsor

Blue Bonefish Lodge, located on the southern end of Ambergris Caye, Belize, has renewed its Gold Sponsorship of Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, supporting BTT’s work to conserve the region’s flats fishery.

“Blue Bonefish Lodge is deeply committed to the conservation of Belize’s world-renowned flats fishery, and our renewed partnership with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust reflects that commitment,” said Chris Leeman, Managing Partner of Blue Bonefish Lodge. “We are proud to support BTT’s science-based initiatives, which are critical to preserving the health of our waters and ensuring sustainable fisheries for generations to come.”

Located four miles south of San Pedro, Blue Bonefish Lodge is a hub for anglers in search of a picturesque spot to pursue bonefish, tarpon and permit on fly or light tackle—all led by a crew of experienced guides. Amenities to explore beyond the water are also readily available, from bicycles and kayaks to stand-up paddle boards and golf carts.

The Blue Bonefish Lodge has played an active role in supporting vital marine conservation efforts. In 2020, the lodge and its expert guides partnered with BTT to help identify local bonefish pre-spawning aggregation sites and contributed to educational programs focused on proper fish handling and responsible catch-and-release practices. The findings from this research have aided BTT in advocating for the protection of these critical spawning areas, which are essential to the long-term health of Belize’s flats fishery.

Since this initial partnership, Blue Bonefish Lodge and BTT have worked alongside the Belize Flats Fishery Association (BFFA) to protect sensitive flats habitat. This includes successfully opposing in 2024 a proposed development at Will Bauer Flats, resulting in the acquisition of the area by the Government of Belize for conservation. Blue Bonefish Lodge has also been an invaluable partner to BTT for its new permit tagging project, which will help identify important permit habitat in Belize and Mexico, information that can inform improved management of the nations’ shared permit fishery.

“BTT greatly appreciate Blue Bonefish Lodge’s continued support of our mission,” said Jim McDuffie, BTT President and CEO. “From opposing unwise coastal development that harms the flats fishery to partnering on innovative new research on the grand slam species, we’re working together to conserve Belize’s economically and culturally significant flats fishery. We look forward to what we will accomplish together in the months to come.”
