Traveling Angler Trip Report: Belize River Lodge

(l-r) Craig Jansen, Mick Kolassa, Capt John Moore, Chuck Hemingway

Belize River Lodge’s second annual tagging challenge was a huge success!  Despite daily high winds of 20+ knots and frequent cloudy skies genetic samples were collected from 8 tarpon and a total of 71 bonefish were tagged.  The 71 tagged bonefish more than doubles last year’s tagged number of 33.  Dirk Burgard and Dennis Young won the most bonefish award.  Craig Jansen and Chuck Hemingway won the most tarpon award.  The largest bonefish was caught by Craig Jansen, and the largest tarpon was caught by Chuck Hemingway.

The trip was led by Bonefish & Tarpon Trust board member Mick Kolassa, organized by Frontiers Travel and hosted by Belize River Lodge.  Participating anglers spend one week catching and tagging bonefish, taking DNA samples from tarpon, learning about the latest research findings and programs being driven by BTT and most importantly, just having a great time fishing.  Dates for next year’s event are March 26 – April 2, 2014.
