Bonefish Restoration Research Project Collection Trip

Borrowing a few bonefish now to produce thousands for later. That was our goal when we recently collected bonefish for BTT’s  Bonefish Restoration Research Project. In collaboration with Harbor Branch at Florida Atlantic University, we are learning how to breed and raise bonefish in captivity.  Once we figure out how to do this, stocking bonefish in the keys to bolster the populations becomes a real and exciting possibility as one of the tools we can use to restore the bonefish fishery. Last week, biologists from HBOI visited us in the Keys in search of bonefish to bring back to their facility in Fort Pierce. Local fishing guides including, Captains Justin Bachert, Bob Branham, and Max Gaspeny joined us and we went on the hunt for bonefish. All in all, the trip was a success, and Harbor Branch researchers were able to bring back some bonefish to spawn. However, we need a handful more bonefish over the next few months to keep this project on track. We are planning another trip in September. If you are a Keys bonefish angler, we would love your help catching fish on our next trip. If you are interested in joining us, please send me an email at (PC: Christopher Robinson)
