Fix Our Water Update: SW Florida Red Tide Not Caused by Lake-O Discharges

There has been concern that the ongoing discharges from the Caloosahatchee River have caused the red tide that is causing fish kills in southwest Florida. The best available scientific information indicates that this is not the case.  FWC has been tracking the bloom for some time, and the existence of the bloom on portions of the region predates the discharges.

In the bigger picture, because the red tide organism (Karenia brevis) is so flexible in nutrient requirements, it can take advantage of many sources of nutrients, so it is possible that nutrients from human activities could exacerbate or prolong red tide blooms.  This requires reducing human-caused nutrient inputs from all sources.
