Islamorada Bonefish Tournament Changes Fish Handling Rules

The 17th Jim Bokor Islamorada All Tackle Spring Bonefish Tournament was held in early April. Jim Bokor, chairman of the tournament and legendary flats champion, supported conservation efforts to protect Upper Keys bonefish by changing the format of this year’s contest to an “All Release” tournament.

In past events, large (weight) bonefish were brought in and weighed for points according to their weight.  Concerned anglers and guides both felt that the practice was harming fish and that many were not surviving even though they were released alive. Mr. Bokor, along with the help of numerous passionate bonefishermen, made the decision to devise a measuring system for this tournament using the IGFA’s World Record Length program. Landed fish were measured, photographed and quickly released.
