Our Organization

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries through research, stewardship, education and advocacy. Our record of accomplishment and ongoing research programs distinguish BTT as a leader in the conservation of these species and their habitats. 

Position Description

The Education Coordinator will develop and implement a comprehensive education program translating science into formats useful with the State of Florida public education system, anglers, political representatives, resource managers, and the general public. Topics will include fish (bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook) and habitat, natural history, conservation, catch and release practices, and related themes. The Education Coordinator must enjoy working with a variety of people and conveying messages through talks, presentations, workshops, videos, written materials, and other appropriate methods.  The Education Coordinator effectively communicates scientific information such as projects and results to non-scientists. This position reports to the Director of Science and Conservation.

Duties

  • Development and implementation of the education program
  • Development, marketing and dissemination of education materials
  • Dissemination of Lesson Plans to professional educators for implementation in classrooms
  • Interaction with colleagues, teachers and community groups on the design and delivery of educational programs
  • The creation and use of multiple outreach tools (speaking, presentations, written documents, videos) 
  • Training others, such as teachers, in the use of resources and in delivering educational sessions
  • Dissemination of educational materials to summer camps, youth groups, and other groups as appropriate
  • Presentations and workshops for school groups and others as appropriate
  • Integration of research and conservation program information into the education program and materials as new information is available
  • Recruiting, supervising and working with volunteers as appropriate
  • Acting as a point of contact for teachers, education professionals, media, and colleagues in response to requests for information on educational issues
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the education program, revising as needed, providing regular reports to Director of Science and Conservation, President, and Board of Directors
  • Managing budgets for projects and educational programs 

Skills

  • Proficiency in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Excellent communications, organization, planning and time management skills. Written and oral communication skills are compulsory. The Education Coordinator should also be able to relay communications from anglers and guides to scientists
  • Ability to thrive in a small office environment, work independently and work in a collaborative role with others
  • Good interpersonal skills and an ability to relate to people of all ages and diverse backgrounds
  • Suitable writing skills for both non-science and scientific audiences
  • Presentation development and execution are necessary to disseminate information and cultivate awareness 
  • General PR writing, such as blog material and BTT Journal writing, are also necessary
  • Communication with diverse groups – angling and guide community, professional educators, resource managers, general public, media, politicians
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
